Ignalina-1 may slip 2005 shutdown commitment

Lithuania promised EU that the Ignalina plants would be shut down, U-1 in 2005, U-2 in 2009. But Lithuanian regulator reports today that he plant is already a year late in submitting decommissioning master plan, and the contract to build a new boiler to replace the process heat from U-1 is also about a year behind. The heat from U-1 is used by public and needed for safety by U-2. [Source: Reuters, Lithuania n-plant closure efforts late - regulator, May 20, 2003]

* 2000 - In preparing the UNSCEAR 2000 report on "Sources and Effects of Ionizing Radiation", the United Nations Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation sent every member nation a Survey of Exposures, asking expert quantification of the radiation exposures to populations in that nation from natural radiation sources.
