* Wolf Creek Generating Station (WCGS) is located in Coffey County, Kansas, approximately five miles northeast of Burlington, Kansas. Fuel loading commenced at WCGS on March 12, 1985, with initial criticality on May 22, 1985. The first detectable quantities of radioactivity were reported in plant effluents in June 1985.

Wolf Creek tritium in Coffey County Lake

Wolf Creek releases radioactive liquid effluent (primarily tritium) into the Coffey County Lake. The lake water contains an average tritium concentration of approximately 13,000 picocuries per liter. During an inspection, NRC found that tritium was present in the plant's fire protection system as a result of using Coffey County Lake as a water supply. The inspector was unsure if the plant was required to treat the tritium in the fire protection system as if it was still licensed material. NRC this week published a "Regulatory Issue Summary" paper on the subject, declaring that the tritium from the lake is no longer considered licensed material, except for purposes of keeping concentration in the lake below maximum allowable, and for actions covered by decommissioning regulations. In addition to this lake water example, the document points out similar reasoning would apply to radioactive material released to atmosphere and then brought back to surface via rain or whatnot.

Dealing with the Dissimilar Metal Weld Issue

On March 8, 2007, the Advisory Committee on Reactor Safeguards (ACRS) is scheduled to hear presentations by and hold discussions with representatives of the NRC staff, their contractors, and the Nuclear Energy Institute regarding the technical basis for the proposed regulatory action for dealing with the dissimilar metal weld issue stemming from the Wolf Creek pressurizer weld flaws, as well as the industry activities associated with this matter. ACRS announced that a portion of this session may be closed to discuss industry proprietary information. This will be the first subject covered that day, and is slated for 8:35 am to 10:15 am. The meeting is to be held at NRC's Rockville Maryland headquarters -- building TWFN, in conference room T-2B3.

Annual performance assessment for 2004
NRC has concluded that, in 2004, (1) WCNOC operated Wolf Creek in a manner that preserved public health and safety, and (2) all cornerstone objectives were met. NRC inspectors spent 1,311 hours on Wolf Creek during the year. This included two team inspections, one on problem identification and resolution, and another on radation safety. Nine safety significant findings were reported -- all were categorized as "green" findings, which is the category for very low safety significance. The results were presented at public meeting in Burlington. A copy of the presentation slides and list of the meeting attendees (name and affiliation) is available from NRC ADAMS system as ACN ML051670566. NRC's Region IV organzation chart for Wolf Creek, including names of resident ispectors and project engineers, is available here.

Wolf Creek - steam generator tube plug #s

The most recent inservice inspection of Steam Generators 'A" and "D" was completed on October 31, 2003. The inspection resulted in the mechanical plugging of 3 tubes in Steam Generator "A" and 17 tubes in Steam Generator "D." One of the 17 tubes plugged in Steam Generator "D" was plugged due to an obstruction in the tube. All the other tubes plugged in Steam Generators "A" and "D" were due to indication of anti-vibration bar wear found during the inservice inspection. In addition to the tubes plugged in Steam Generators "A" and "D", 3 original manufacturing plugs in Steam Generator "A" and 1 damaged mechanical plug in Steam Generator "D" were replaced with weld plugs. Steam Generators "B" and "C" were not inspected during this inservice inspection.

Including the tubes plugged during this inservice inspection, the total number of tubes plugged in each steam generator to date are as follows:

Steam Generator "A" 29*
Steam Generator "B" 28
Steam Generator "C" 19
Steam Generator "D" 97

*An additional 3 plugs are installed in Steam Generator "A" cold leg only, due to tubesheet drilling mistakes during manufacturing. No tubes are installed in those locations.
