On February 4, 2005, the unit was taken off-line to repair a leaking sixth point feedwater heater. The unit was subsequently shutdown. During startup, on February 7, the unit was manually tripped during startup following the partial drop of a control rod. The unit was taken critical on February 8, and reached full power on February 10. Unit 2 operated at or near full power the entire period. [Source: N. Surry-1 head replacement work is complete. The outage began April 20, and the unit is expected to be back online before June 20, although utility cites competitive reasons for not being more specific about restart date. Surry-2 head replacement is scheduled for this autumn. [Source: Eileen O'Grady (Bloomberg News), "Dominion puts new head on Va. reactor", Akron Beacon Journal, June 10, 2003] April 16, 2003: Surry highlights from parent company's 1st Quarter 2003 financial conference call Dominion Energy: received NRC license renewals for the North Anna and Surry nuclear units. Live Q&A: Q28. (Michael Worms, Gerard Klauer Mattison) Can you give us a schedule of the reactor head replacements that are yet to come? A. (Thomas Farrell) ... One of the Surry units will come down on Sunday. We expect all these outages to take about 55-60 days. One of the Surry units will come down this Sunday, expected back early June. The second and last of the Surry units to have a vessel head replaced will be in the Fall refueling outage. [Source: Dominion Resources Inc., 2003 Q1 Earnings Conference Call, April 16, 2003 (transcript 041603sy.799, originated and copyright by CCBN and FDCH e-Media) April 15, 2003: A letter to the editor of Richmond Times Dispatch took eloquent exception to the anti-nuclear focus of the newspaper's story announcing license extension approvals. The letter writer concluded with "The fact that the North Anna and Surry power stations may operate for an additional 20 years means Virginia's citizens will pay less for electricity and suffer less environmental insult. That is good news!" The editors' reply seems a bit off the mark to nuclear.com: "News editors respond: Because of electric deregulation, Dominion Virginia Power is not obligated to pass along any of the cost savings that are associated with extending the life of the nuclear power plants to Virginia consumers."
