Summary of Plant Status - April 1 to June 30, 2005

Unit 1 began the period at approximately 100 percent rated thermal power (RTP) and operated at full power for the entire period.

Unit 2 began the period shutdown in a refueling outage. Unit 2 was taken critical on April 13, went on-line April 14, and was manually tripped on April 15, due to problems with the ÔAÕ steam generator feed regulating valve. On April 17 Unit 2 was again taken critical, went on-line, and was manually tripped again due to continued problems with the ÔAÕ steam generator feed regulating valve. Unit 2 was taken critical on April 20, went on-line April 20, and reached 100% power on April 22. The unit remained at approximately 100 percent RTP for the rest of the period.

* McGuire - new roof over diesel generators had to be redone after it, twice, caught on fire due to heat from the diesels

* McGuire-1 - wrong cable cut caused LCO, power down to 45% before repair complete 5-1/2 hours later (May 2, 2003) Summary of Plant Status (March 23, 2003 - June 21, 2003):

Unit 1 began the inspection period at approximately 100 percent rated thermal power (RTP). On April 18 and 19, power was reduced to approximately 40 percent to perform several repair activities. The primary focus for the downpower was to replace both of the main feedwater pump turbine trip solenoid valves which had caused a previous runback event on Unit 2. On May 2, power was reduced on Unit 1 to approximately 45 percent as a result of commencing a shutdown in accordance with Technical Specification (TS) Limiting Condition of Operation (LCO) 3.0.3 due to both trains of the hydrogen mitigation system being rendered inoperable. TS 3.0.3 was exited prior to completing the shutdown when repairs were made to one train. Unit 1 returned to approximately 100 percent on May 2 where it remained for the remainder of the inspection period.

Unit 2 began the inspection period at approximately 100 percent RTP. On May 30, power was reduced to 50 percent by operators due to decreasing control air pressure on the 2A Generator Breaker. Following repairs of a pressure regulator and a pilot valve, Unit 2 returned to 100 percent on June 1.

Status of License Renewal Activities: [from NRC's June 20 letter to Congress, containing status report for period of April 1-30]

McGuire, Units 1 and 2, and Catawba, Units 1 and 2, Combined Renewal Applications

NRC staff issued the final supplemental environmental impact statements (SEIS) for McGuire and Catawba in December 2002. The safety evaluation report resolving the open items was issued in January 2003. The staff is supporting completion of the hearing process. A decision on the renewal of the licenses is expected by December 2003. In January 2002, the Atomic Safety and Licensing Board (ASLB) admitted contentions filed by two petitioners in the Catawba and McGuire license renewal proceeding. The staff and Duke appealed the ASLB decision and the contentions were subsequently dismissed. However, in December 2002, the Commission reinstated late-filed contentions that had been submitted in May 2002. In April 2003, the petitioners requested that one of the dismissed contentions be reinstated. These late-filed contentions and the request for reinstatement are currently being reviewed by the ASLB for admissibility.
