Of all the mutations imagined to be caused by nuclear plant, the one portrayed in the movie Teeth is a real downer
Teeth opened today in New York and Los Angeles. Lead actress Jess Weixler won a jury prize at Sundance... The film opens with a reeeeeeally long shot of the nuclear cooling towers in Dawn's neighborhood that probably caused the mutation. They pop up every 15 minutes or so. I lost count after 7 appearances.

[BLU-RAY REVIEW] Sunshine
The year is 2057. Icarus I was lost in space, and now it's up to the crew of Icarus II to deliver a massive nuclear payload to the sun to explode it and ignite a new star. Hanging in the balance is Earth, which is in near-darkness now because of the waning sun. It's a wonderful sci-fi premise, and one that reinforces the whole idea of what would happen if we lost some of the natural resources that we now take for granted... Alwin Kuchler's cinematography and a believable stranded-in-space tension are enough to make this film worthwhile ...

The Last Woman on Earth
DVD
Science Fiction - 1 hr 11 min
Release date: 1/21/2003
Studio: Alpha Video
H-bombs kill everybody except three vacationers in Puerto Rico who happen to be scuba diving during the blasts. The special trio are a gangster named Harold (Anthony Carbone), his moll, Mary-Belle (Betsy Jones Moreland), and his lawyer, Martin (Robert Towne). They wander the empty streets and engage in lots of dialogue about humankind's future. Eventually the men fight over who will mate with Mary-Belle and rebuild civilization. Martin is afraid if she spawns with the thuggish Harold, the world will be repopulated with violent people doomed to a future of more bomb building. On Harold's side is the strong-survive theory of Darwinian natural selection. At least the three get to enjoy some crowd-free shopping before the inevitable showdown. This was the first filmed script by costar Towne (credited as Edward Wain), who would later become the highly respected writer of CHINATOWN and THE LAST DETAIL. Director Roger "King of the Bs" Corman filmed it while on vacation in Puerto Rico, where he also made CREATURE FROM THE HAUNTED SEA with the same cast and crew and produced BATTLE OF BLOOD ISLAND, all on the same trip. The film original hit the theaters in 1960.

The China Syndrome
DVD
Drama - 2 hr 3 min
Release date: 8/28/2001
Studio: Columbia TriStar Home Entertainment
It was downright eerie that those Hollywooders chose to include the WASH-740 quote about a nuclear plant accident affecting an area "the size of Pennsylvania" in this film released so soon _before_ the Three Mile Island accident. There's lots to like and dislike about this film, but the close-up scene on the loose nut on the reactor coolant pump surely prompted cold-sweat memories in thousands besides me. Jack Lemmon portrayed a decent and competent power plant employee. No way that nut would've been left untorqued. No way.

Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb
DVD
Drama - 1 hr 30 min
Release date: 5/7/2002
Studio: Columbia TriStar Home Entertainment
If Stanley Kubrick had been right, we probably wouldn't have survived the Cold War. But that doesn't make this film any less entertaining. Heck, the relief that the dark prospects were avoided makes Dr. Strangelove much more enjoyable now than then. There's so many great moments in this film. The quick laugh line "...you can't in here. This is the War Room." The image of Slim Pickins whooping it up riding on the A-bomb to its target. Peter Sellers. George C. Scott. This is pretty much on everybody's list of the greatest films ever made. This special edition includes original theater trailer, a documentary about the making of the movie, interviews with Sellers and Scott, and more.
