* Australia's federal nuclear inquiry gives thumbs up to n-plants

The front page of tomorrow's The Australian has story about a report to be released today by nuclear options inquiry panel headed by former Telstra chief Dr. Ziggy Switkowski. The report concludes that nuclear power "is the least cost, low-emission technology that canb provide baseload power available today and can play a role in Australia's future generation mix. Australia's growing electricity demand is forecast to require more than doubling current electricity supply by 2050, according to the Energy Reform Infrastructure Group.

The report also notes that Australia could quadruple the value of its uranium exports by doing more than just sending the uranium oxide overseas. The $573-million worth of uranium exported last year could have been "transformed into a further $1.8-billion in value after conversion, enrichment, and fuel fabrication", the report says, despite what it terms "very significant investment and technology obstacles to the development of uranium enrichment capacity."

* India and China - relationship beyond Nuclear Suppliers Group?

The top story on front page of India daily newspaper The Hindu today discusses prospects, especially civil nuclear power prospects, for relations between India and China on the eve of the first visit to India by a Chinese president in ten years. Asked whether civilian nuclear cooperation with China could extend beyond the Nuclear Suppliers Group since Beijing had supplied nuclear fuel for the Tarapur plant in 1995, India's External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee replied "The possibilities are there. But it will depend on how we respond to each other's suggestions."

* Iran likened to pre-WWII Germany

Washington Times columnist Suzanne Fields today discusses why Iran is a genuine modern analog to Nazi Germany.

* Vigilance required at home to preserve the freedoms for which we're fighting abroad

Nat Hentoff's "Sweet Land of Liberty" column this week in Washington Times discusses the present state of constitutional liberties in the U.S., especially after the Military Commissions Act of 2006, and the widespread lack of concern about same. The writer says he "expect[s] little passion for the health of the Constitution from Rep. Nancy Pelosi and Sen. Harry Reid. He does find hope in Sen. Leahy, the Billof Rights Defense Committees, ACLU, Cato Institute, and David Keene (head of the American Conservative Union). Nuclear.com agrees with our elder Mr. Hentoff's assessment of the latter two.
