OYSTER CREEK - UNION CITES SAFETY IMPLICATIONS OF SWEEPING WORKPLACE RULE CHANGES DESIRED BY AMERGEN

Jim McElhatton (Staff Writer, The Press of Atlantic City), "AmerGen withdraws contract offer", The Press of Atlantic City, June 7, 2003

AmerGen said its final contract offer included includes 3 percent wage increases, a 12.5 percent improvement in the company's retirement savings plan, vacation time increases and increases in employee contributions for medical insurance.

[IBEW president Ed] Stroup said the strikers aren't protesting about financial issues, however. "This is about safety," he said. ... Stroup said the union's 217 workers twice rejected the company's three-year contract offer because of proposed sweeping changes in workplace rules that would impact plant safety. "A nuclear power plant electrician is not a nuclear power plant mechanic," Stroup said. "To assume that they can do different jobs is not only illogical but, in fact, potentially dangerous."
