NRR BUDGET HAS BEEN SQUEEZED BY DAVIS-BESSE FOLLOWUP, AND LICENSE RENEWAL IS STAFF'S FIRST CHOICE FOR CUTS

Gregory Twachtman (Platts, Washington), "NRC Seeks To Limit Number Of Relicensing Applications Under Review", Inside N.R.C., June 2, 2003, p. 1

Gillespie [Frank Gillespie, deputy director of regulatory improvement programs in NRC's Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation (NRR)] said NRR has been hit hard by the Davis-Besse reactor head corrosion discovery and other unanticipated activities. He said follow-up regulatory activities would strain resources. He did not say how many FTEs would be needed for the inspection activities but said the staff has identified two possible areas that might be reduced as a result -- the ''other'' area of NRR activities or LRA review resources. The staff chose to cut from renewal resources, if needed, he said.
