SKULL VALLEY - OVERVIEW OF PROPOSED SPENT FUEL STORAGE PROJECT
Judy Fahys (The Salt Lake Tribune), "N-Waste Site Quake-Safe, Board Says", The Salt Lake Tribune, May 23, 2003
PFS needs federal approval to park up to 4,000 steel-and-concrete casks, holding up to 44,000 tons of deadly radioactive waste, on reinforced concrete pads at the Skull Valley Goshute Reservation, about 50 miles southwest of Salt Lake City.
Under the NRC license, the waste eventually would be permanently disposed of elsewhere, presumably buried in the national repository at Yucca Mountain in Nevada.
The 100-acre storage in Skull Valley would be big enough to hold nearly all the waste produced
at U.S. commercial facilities since utilities began generating electricity in nuclear reactors
almost a half century ago.
